Love Your Body: 5 Tips For That Much Needed Post-CNY Detox

Bid those toxins goodbye!

Chinese New Year is one of our fave seasons and as true blue Singaporeans, snacking on CNY goodies is a definite must during house visitations. The list of lip-smacking snacks is never ending; from Kueh Lapis to Love Letters, Bak Kwa to Pineapple Tarts, Kueh Bangkit to Shrimp Rolls and many many more.

If you’re like us who can’t keep our hands off those sinful CNY goodies, that new top/dress/pants that you bought before CNY might be left sitting in the wardrobe for a while…

The Year of the Pig doesn’t mean that we need to eat (and look) like one. Overloading your body system will make you feel bloated and lethargic, so now’s probably a good time to be thinking: D-E-T-O-X

By eliminating toxins and feeding your body with vitamins and nutrients, optimum health can be maintained. Detoxing can also help improve your immune system while allowing your body to recover and recharge. To help you along the way, here are 5 recommended tips for you:

Tip #1: Eat Your Fibre

Notice the general lack of greens in your CNY diet? Well, eating all that rich food probably overburdened your digestive system and caused toxins to accumulate in your body. In order to DETOX, you need to load up on fibre-rich foods, specifically insoluble fibre. Commonly found in vegetables and grains, insoluble fibre is not readily digested by our bodies. Think of it as swallowing a broom – as it moves through your digestive system, it helps sweep things along your digestive tract, helping you to feel less bloated. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.

Tip #2: Drink Plenty Of Water

Yes we get it – there was no water to be found during house visitations. Only TIGER beer, Yeo’s/Pokka packet drinks and Coca Cola in red cans for extra luck during Mahjong sessions. Well, the water taps that were hiding (in plain sight) during CNY have all returned. Remember: water is integral to the digestion process. Drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water daily will flush out your body’s toxins. Pro tip: add some lemon juice to a warm glass of water every morning as this citrus fruit can help promote digestion, regulate bowel movement and aid in the detoxification process.

Tip #3: Take In Some Culture

This doesn’t mean playing Ban-luck or Mahjong. Culture here refers to “good bacteria” or Probiotics. Essentially, our gut is the body’s gatekeeper, letting in helpful compounds and evicting harmful ones. When the gut is in good shape, our systems run efficiently, but when it’s not, we may experience an upset stomach, be at risk for weight gain, encounter digestive problems like heartburn and constipation, or just feel vaguely out of sorts. Probiotics or “good bacteria” are live microorganisms which are effective in keeping our guts healthy. Besides probiotic supplements, you can also try whole grains, onions, garlic, leeks, artichokes, asparagus, and chicory root.

Tip #4: Breathe

I can only pray that this is something you’re intimately familiar with… Yet, it’s a given fact that most people don’t practise breathing properly! The easiest way to relax and disassociate yourself from stress is to practise abdominal breathing for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Deep breathing allows oxygen to circulate more completely throughout your body and promote a state of calmness. This can free your mind and body from stress hormones that create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver, while allowing you the space and time to… breathe…

Tip #5: Sweat It Out

So you’ve probably consumed enough calories to sustain a small herd of rhinoceros for a week. Now, if you don’t burn those calories, very soon you will start looking like a rhino yourself too. Spare tyres, butterfly arms, thunder thighs, double chins and droopy asses… don’t let these words linger in your vocabulary this year! Exercising can help boost your metabolic rate and reduce bloatedness. But if you think that’s too much effort still, you can start with Estetica’s 7-in-1 CelluBuster Therapy to help kickstart your metabolism amidst your busy schedule and post-festive blues.
