Is your sunscreen killing coral reefs?

Save our coral reefs, one small step at a time!

Did you know that the planet has already lost 50% of its corals in the last 30 years? Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they provide an essential ecosystem for a quarter of all marine life.

The threats to coral reefs have increased tremendously due to global warming, ocean acidification and plastic pollution. As reef ecosystems collapse, already at-risk species may face extinction. Reefs are not only home to thousands of species of marine life, but they also protect coastal areas by reducing the power of waves hitting the coast, and provide a crucial source of income for millions of people.

What has it got to do with sunscreens?

Ingredients and substances found in sunscreens can often contain harmful chemicals and nanoparticles that can disrupt coral’s reproduction and growth cycles, ultimately leading to bleaching, i.e. when corals lose their vibrant colours, turn white and are subject to mortality.

In line with ést.lab’s corporate sustainability plan, we are happy to share that we have taken the extra step to ensure that our sunscreens – both the newly reformulated SunShield Aqua SPF50*** and best-selling SunShield SPF50*** are formulated to be reef-safe, i.e. free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are UV-blocking chemicals that have been linked to increased coral bleaching!

What can you do to safeguard our “rainforests of the sea”?

Today, coral restoration is still costly, time-intensive and limited in scale. Each coral has to be handled manually and transplanted to the reef by hand. It may not be possible to match the scale at which reefs decline worldwide, nevertheless, ést.lab is committed to doing our part to restore coral reefs!

So… which sunscreen should you use?

SunShield Aqua SPF50***

This water-based sunscreen is now freshly reformulated with Anti-Blue Light Technology to protect your skin against harmful effects of blue light emitting from digital devices and indoor lighting that can worsen photo-ageing, hyperpigmentation and skin inflammation. With the addition of Sodium PCA that replenishes and strengthens the skin’s ability in retaining moisture even under dehydrating conditions such as air-conditioned environments, it is now even more hydrating than ever.

Doubling up as a tinted moisturiser with antioxidant and anti-ageing skincare benefits, this new and better-than-before formulation remains non-comedogenic, specially formulated to suit all skin types, especially oily, acne-prone and sensitive skin while shielding you from the harmful rays of UVA and UVB and blue-light exposure.

SunShield SPF50***

This best-selling sunscreen provides all-round protection beyond UV rays with FloraGLO Lutein Topical™, an ingredient extracted from calendula, proven to be highly effective in shielding the skin from blue light.

A waterproof broad-spectrum UV block with high SPF factor, it protects your skin against sunburn and photo-ageing, doubles up as a tinted make-up base to conceal blemishes and provide sheer coverage, contains antioxidant and anti-ageing effects, and soothes and repairs sun-damaged skin.

This glow-boosting SPF, powered with colour-adaptive technology that applies white and blends into your skin tone for buildable, light-medium coverage, is suitable especially for normal, dry and ageing skin. The colour change signifies the activation of UV sensitive DNA micro-capsules to release Vitamins C & E to protect your skin upon UV exposure for maximum efficiency.
