Remember the days when eyebrow tattoos meant thick cartoonish blue-black lines? Yes, the first wave of eyebrow tattoos actually looked like it had been drawn on with a marker and when the colour faded, they turned into “greenish mouldy algae” .

Nonetheless, for anyone who was born with barely-there brows or spent a fortune on eyebrow pencils, eyebrow tattoo was certainly a life saviour. And all thanks to the pioneers who created and tested early versions of embroidery techniques, they have paved the way for more sophisticated techniques we have available today – eyebrow embroidery, otherwise known as microblading.

Are you troubled over your eyebrows or the lack of? Have you been thinking of enhancing your eyebrows but do not know how?

Because the process is semi-permanent, it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you take the plunge. We are here to clear all your doubts and tell you all that you need to know:

What is eyebrow embroidery or microblading? Microblading is technically a form of tattooing and the process involves implanting colour pigment beneath the surface of the skin with tiny disposable needles in a way makes it look like hair strokes. It is meant to give thin brows the appearance of natural thickness and volume. Eyebrow Embroidery is a process where colored pigments are added to the skin. This technique fills in the sparse areas on your brows to give them a fuller brow look and is a form of semi-permanent makeup.

Who’s suitable? Any clients, men and women, who have suffered from hair loss such as Alopecia, chemotherapy, Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) or just plain over-tweezing are all candidates for microblading. As a precaution, anyone taking accutane or any blood-thinning medications, or anyone who is pregnant or nursing, should not try microblading.

Prep your skin: In order to get the best results, our eyebrow specialist will need to work with your skin in as natural a state as possible. Avoid extreme sun exposure prior to your appointment and if you normally get your brows threaded, do buffer a minimum of 3 days before your appointment. Come to your appointment well-rested and hydrated and most importantly, not hungover…

It uses your existing eyebrows: Many people assume they need to shave or remove their existing eyebrow hair before the treatment, but that’s not the case. Our eyebrow specialist will only remove any hairs that fall outside of your final shape, if necessary.

It takes a few hours: The first step of the process is deciding on a brow shape so communication with our eyebrow specialist is extremely critical. While you have your own preferences, it is equally essential to choose a brow shape to accentuate your facial features. Once the shape has been determined, our artist applies numbing cream to the area around the eyebrows and the microblading begins. The entire procedure, including all the prep work, generally takes about 2-3 hours but the actual stroke-by-stroke microblading process takes about 45 minutes to an hour. At the end of the process, soothing balm will be applied to speed up the healing process.

It does not hurt: The eyebrow embroidery process is almost painless. Before the microblading process begins, our artist will apply numbing cream all over your eyebrows to minimize the pain. If you feel any form of discomfort, the numbing cream can be re-applied to improve your comfort level.

It requires a touch-up: On the day of treatment, the shade of the brows may initially appear stronger and darker than expected. Any redness will fade within a couple of hours. Over the next few days, a ‘crust’ will form over the brows which will naturally flake off within 2 weeks. During this time, you will need to apply a balm 4 times a day or when the eyebrows feel tight or itchy. Skin picking is a big no-no as it would lead to uneven colouration. As the skin usually does not fully absorb all the colour pigment, a touch-up treatment one month after the session is required.

It lasts a long time: Because the process is done within the surface layers of your skin, the colour pigment can last up to 2 years. Hence, you have the flexibility to change the shape of your eyebrows to match the latest styles you like.

Go to a trusted name: As with any form of tattooing, there are certain risks associated with microblading. In order to keep yourself safe, be sure to follow pre- and post care instructions and follow proper hygiene when washing and touching your face. Also, make sure to choose a sterile salon where they only use single use, disposable needles and supplies.

As Jack Black once said, “you must never underestimate the power of the eyebrow.”
